Mizuno Tanrenjo

What does a theater actor and a master blacksmith have in common? To get an answer you have to ask Noritada 'Jun' Mizuno himself? Lol. He is currently the master blacksmith leading the Mizuno Tanrenjo in Sakai who have been producing some of the finest blades in Japan.

Established by Torakichi Mizuno in 1872, his family have forged blades that is not only supported by local people but also highly regarded by elites in Japanese society.

In 1950s the second generation Masanori Mizuno was chosen to forge the four demon conquering sickles (Mayokegama) of the five storied Pagoda of Horyu-ji temple (First UNESCO World Heritage Site of Japan). These sickles are considered the talisman to protect the structure from lightnings and evil spirits.

In 1952 and 1980 his Highness Prince Takahito Mikasa and his Highness Prince Hirohito Mikasa have visited the prestigious workshop to see and admire the craftsmanship of the Mizunos. And to honor that visit they engraved 賜台覧 logo on their blades.

And of course aside from creating incredible honyakis they are the originators of fuguhuki knives that is used to slice very thin see through (usuzukuri) sashimis of fugu.

Mizuno Tanrenjo also continues to forge katanas as an award for the champion of the National University Sumo Wrestling Championship series since 1951.

We are honored to carry their fantastic knives and will be offering more of their incredible products.
